NBL Player Points System Explained:

The Player Points Ranking and Team Total Points Systems have been put in place as a strategy to ensure that all clubs have equitable access to the player talent in order to maximise the quality of the competition.

Team Total Points System

Each player on an NBL Club’s Active Player List will be allocated in a Player Points Ranking (PPR) between 1 and 10.

Team Total Points shall be calculated as the aggregate of Player Points Rankings of all players on an NBL Club’s Active Player List and shall not

exceed 70 for the 2009/10 season.  A Development Squad member is not included in calculating the Team Total Points unless they replace a player on waiver.

Player Points Ranking of Contracted Players

No player is eligible to be registered or play with a NBL Club until their Player Points Ranking as been assessed.

Calculating the Player Points Ranking

At the end of each season, the NBL shall calculate the Player Point Ranking for each player that was contracted with a NBL Club in that season and shall publish the list within two weeks of the end of the season.

Subject to any variation under the Player Point Ranking of each player shall be calculated by the agreed statistical formula.

The Player Point Ranking shall be reviewed by the Player Points Appeal Committee and the committee may, prior to the rankings being published, vary the ranking of any player if it believes that the ranking as calculated does not accurately reflect that player’s performance.

Rookies have a Player Point Ranking of 1 point for the duration of their first NBL player’s contract.  A Rookie who was on scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport for more than one year will be assigned a Player Point Ranking of 3 points for the duration of their initial NBL players’ contract.

A Rookie who is an Australian or New Zealand citizen and immediately before contracting with any NBL Club had spent more than one year playing in the US College system or returned for a second year to a US college will be assigned a Player Point Ranking of 3 points for the duration of their initial NBL players’ contract.

Non-Restricted Players returning from Overseas or having played overseas will be allocated a Player Points Ranking according to where they were contracted to play:

(a)       NBA / CBA – 10 points

(b)       NBDL, European Leagues – 9 points

(c)       Other International Leagues – 8 points
